LG GW520 Preview

The LG GW520, starts where the KS360 left off and offers full touchscreen capabilities on a 2.8" screen and 7.2Mbps HSDPA. The camera got a slight bump to 3 megapixels and of course there's the slide-out QWERTY, which if its predecessor is any indication.

The LG GW520 also features LG's LiveSquare, which shows your favorite contacts on the homescreen as animated characters, giving you quick access to them.

LG GC900 Viewty Smart preview: First look

LG GC900 Viewty Smart (sometimes also called Viewty 2) is making a run for it as the next LG flagship. What can we say, when you're blue-blooded, some things come au naturel - the snappy and quite thumbable S-Class UI, the 8 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and GPS all hide behind a 3-inch touchscreen lodged into a body that's only 12.4mm thick. We don't know about you, but by our books all that gadgetness calls for a proper inspection.

As rumors have it, the LG Viewty Smart is set to start its European tour as early as May or June, despite the fact that it has only been officially announced two weeks ago. Well, it's true, LG did tease us with a prototype back at the MWC 2009 in February, but it's only now that we get to hold it in our hands and see it in good working order. And pleased we are...

LG KM900 Arena review: A touch of class

One of the most exciting handsets the season - the LG KM900 Arena - returns to our office and this time it is going to stay a bit longer. After getting off to a flying start in both sales and reviews the Arena certainly looks like the next big thing from LG. In these tough economic times no company can afford too many blunders so it better live up to those high expectations.

The LG KM900 Arena grabbed our attention for the first time back in February at the MWC and even more so last month when we previewed it. Let's see if it's third time lucky and if it will be able to completely sweep us off our feet in a full review.

The LG KM900 Arena is the pioneer of the new UI designed by the South Korean company, boldly named S-class. Promising fluidity never seen before and uncompromising looks and functionality, it is starting to take the world by storm. We doubt that it will be of a measure equal to the hurricane created by the iPhone's UI but the whole package might well surprise us.

LG KM900 Arena preview: First look

The LG Arena is getting set to storm its way across Europe but not before a proper courtesy call. Yes sir, one of the Barcelona Mobile World Congress headliners is feeling right at home at the arena. And the pleasure is ours too.

The well-rounded feature set - which could've been a major asset in any reputable handset - is easily eclipsed by the interface that boasts some of the best looks and handling in quite a while. S-class is a not a name to misuse so let's hope the Arena lives up to the expectations.

Our LG namesake is the first ever handset to run the new touch UI of the Korean company. In addition, you get a state of the art connectivity package and a nicely sounding 5 megapixel shooter. Well, obviously it's not a top of the line imaging monster like the Renoir but the target audience is different here.

Having made a great first impression with its brilliant screen and inspiring UI, the LG KM900 Arena is now to face a more serious test. It's a quick little preview we've got for you here but hopefully the Arena will have no secrets left.

For starters let's have a look at the LG KM900 Arena main specs.

LG KC910 Renoir review: Portrait of a high-flyer

The LG KC910 has a moniker that sends out a bold and clear statement about talent. Packing a whopping 8 megapixel camera and top-of-the-line video recording, the LG KC910 Renoir is all about capturing the moment, leaving an impression. While this alone should be enough to assert an identity, the Renoir just won't stop there. With the full touch user interface and the portly 3" display, everything is a mere touch away. Wi-Fi, HSDPA and GPS are all aboard to add the last bits of oomph to the feature-loaded LG Renoir.

The exciting facts and figures from the Renoir specs sheet however won't really give away its real-life performance and this is where we step in. We already had the camera performance of the LG Renoir to bits in our 8 megapixel cameraphone shootout but it's time to move up and look at the bigger picture.

LG KC910 Renoir official images

It certainly took us quite some time to bring this review forward. Perhaps we even pushed it over the peak of your anticipation, but we didn't mean to get you starved so you like the meal better.

Our better-late-than-never department - duly sent to the corner, by the way - has finally prepared a full-featured, action-packed and hopefully eye-opening review of one of the best imaging mobile phones this year - the LG KC910 Renoir.
Key features:
Tri-band/Quad-band GSM versions, dual-band HSDPA
3" 256K-color touchscreen TFT display (240 x 400 pixels)
8 megapixel autofocus camera, xenon flash (geo-tagging, face tracking, blink detection, touch focus, manual focus)
Video recording in AVI format, VGA@30fps, QVGA@120fps, time-lapse QVGA videos
Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
Wi-Fi
GPS receiver with A-GPS support
TV-out
100MB internal memory
Hot-swappable microSD card slot (ships with 8GB card)
Accelerometer for auto screen rotate
DivX/XviD video playback
Dolby Mobile music enhancement
FM radio with RDS
Office document viewer
Multi-tasking with a real task manager
Handwriting recognition
Excellent touch optimized image gallery
Direct video uploads to YouTube
Main disadvantages:
Xenon flash is inadequately powered and causes the camera to underexpose
Fullscreen camera viewfinder doesn't show the entire frame
No video streaming over Wi-Fi (such as the mobile YouTube)
No Java connection over Wi-Fi (so Google Maps needs a data plan)
No voice-guided GPS navigation
Stylus as dongle only, no stylus compartment
Design will not appeal to everyone

LG Renoir is among the few 8 megapixel cameraphones that are already on the market and chances are you have been eyeing it big time for this year's holiday shopping - especially if you are into big touchscreens.

It builds on the Viewty popularity but does walk its own path, adding a number of innovations to the equation. The feel and overall experience is different - and better - with LG Renoir.

LG KF900 Prada review: Messenger wears Prada

For the original LG Prada the best way to travel in style was to travel light. But this time around it's carrying a full QWERTY suitcase packed with goodies. Top of the line functionality and an updated interface sound just the right kind of luggage to us. But good enough won't do if it's not glam enough. The new LG KF900 Prada may seem like the missing link between the techie high end and exclusive fashionware. But will HSDPA, Wi-Fi, QWERTY and DivX ring the right bell with the target audience?

Last week we saw Samsung ride on the Emporio Armani youth appeal and now we're back by the catwalk with the more moderate, perhaps even conservative, but nonetheless attractive, new Prada phone by LG.

And we've got loads to cover. Are the changed form factor and the QWERTY keyboard likely to backfire, and will performance ever be make or break for the fashion savvy? Rarely has a designer package promised so much action, so let's roll.
Key features:
3-inch 262K-color capacitive touchscreen display of WQVGA resolution
Comfortable QWERTY keyboard
5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash
D1 (720x480) resolution video recording at 30fps
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
Dual band 3G with HSDPA support
Wi-Fi
Responsive Flash-based interface with multi-touch support
Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and USB v2.0
Stylish and generous retail package
microSD memory card slot (verified to work with 16GB cards)
FM radio with RDS
Accelerometer sensor for screen auto rotate
TV-out
Office document viewer
DivX video support
Fashion-related content preloaded
Main disadvantages:
Two-year-old design
The large waistline doesn't match the fashionable image (but is OK for a QWERTY messenger)
Plastic build
No GPS (LG Renoir has it)
No XviD video support (LG Renoir has it)
Multi-touch has rather limited use
No Flash support in the web browser
Video recording is a letdown
High cost-to-features ratio (but OK for a premium fashion handset)

It was about time the first Prada phone by LG got an update, no doubt about that. Data transfers, connectivity, multimedia and user interface upgrades are spot on, but a hardware QWERTY keyboard was hardly essential. It's the Prada phone after all, and it probably needs all those buttons as much as the Sonim rugged phones need a Dolce & Gabbana carrying case.

Oh well, all-in-one QWERTY touchscreens are obviously the new black. Or so the LG KF900 Prada believes. Keen to find a niche within the niche, it lands right in the middle of not so friendly smartphone crowd. It's got the features to stand up to the XPERIA, HTC and the likes but it's kinda hard to imagine the ruthless WinMo machine melting with pity for the adorable, helpless, irresistible Prada.

Anyway, we think we'd be better off skipping our traditional round of window shopping this time. After all comparing the Prada to the smart messengers running Symbian or Windows Mobile will be irrelevant and unfair. There will be of course references to equally equipped messengers as we go, for both performance and looks, but that will be all.

LG KS360 review: Of teens and twitters

LG KS360 is a mid-ranger that will easily catch your eye with bold colors and quirky controls. LG have managed to create a handset that's cunningly full of character, though it's kinda hard to think of it in the hands of a grown-up. It does seem like a toy at first glance and those color combos are to die for if you are of certain age and attitude.

Yet quite unexpectedly, LG KS360 is quick to serve a bunch of nice features such as a large and vivid 2.4-inch display, full QWERTY keyboard, a 2 megapixel snapper and… believe it or not… a wee tot of touchscreen.

This midrange phone isn't exactly hard to keep your cool about and the flashy paintjobs don't help much either. But we were pleasantly surprised by the ergonomics and performance of the KS360. So while we gear up to put the LG KS360 through its paces, you better get yourself ready to be surprised too.

LG KS360 official photos

The LG KS360 will be available in several color combinations, some of which will be exclusive to various carriers - the full list of color options includes Black and red, Black and silver, White and soft pink, and Titanium and bright blue.
Key features
Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
Large 2.4" TFT display of QVGA resolution
Full slide-out QWERTY keyboard with screen rotation
Touchscreen dialing
2 megapixel camera
Stereo Bluetooth
FM radio
microSD memory card slot (up to 4GB)
Threaded SMS
Attractive 3D image gallery
Office document viewer
Main disadvantages
No UMTS support
No camera autofocus
Poor video recording resolution (fit for MMS only)
Awkward file manager - no user-created folders
Uncomfortable phonebook (takes two clicks to get to the contacts list)
No smart dialing
The FM radio lacks RDS and cannot play in the background
Poor web browser and basic music player

The young and texting-savvy are two obvious targets of the slide-out QWERTY KS360. And while 18+ is not very likely, bill payers are given some sort of say with pay-as-you-go. The manufacturer is teaming up with operators such as Orange to offer the devices with the added value of free messages and free access to social community websites such as MySpace, Bebo, and FaceBook on Pay-as-you-go basis.

Currently the handset can be found for around 80 GBP (140 US dollars or 99 euro) at Orange UK (the pink color version is one of their exclusive deals too). So if you are looking for a LG KS360, we guess your carrier's retail stores are the place to start.

The unusual form factor puts the LG KS360 into a really narrow market segment currently cornered by the T-Mobile Sidekick family (the Sidekick Slide - a joint effort of Danger and Motorola - being the recent model at T-Mobile UK).

What both devices have in common are lively colors, QWERTY keypad and the young targeting, but with a decisive difference. T-Mobile is offering the Sidekick only on a Pay-monthly basis, while the KS360 is available on Pay-as-you-go. Additionally, the Sidekick Slide is way larger and heavier than the LG KS360.

LG KP500 Cookie review: Grab a bite

It almost feels unfair of LG to give the KP500 a name that's so hard to say no to. The Cookie scent seems to have inspired a craving already and LG are hoping to have you coming back for more. A genuinely affordable touchscreen, a very decent specs sheet, and fun and friendly interface can turn out quite a treat if baked right. Our light and crunchy review is hot out of the oven, so let's crack the fortune cookie, shall we.

The LG KP500 Cookie seems to have every reason to chill out and cash in on the kept promise of making touch-operated phones so sweetly inexpensive. Available for a mere 200 euro (contract-free) it might enjoy a decent run, pretty much owning the lower end of touchscreens at this point. So much so, that it's tempting to speculate whether the Cookie could've been the right kind of response to the first iPhone, with the proper timing of course. OK, this maybe taking it too far but don't go blaming us. It's the Cookie.Key features:3" 256K-color TFT touchscreen (240 x 400 pixels) Quad-band GSM support 3 megapixel fixed focus camera Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP 50MB internal memory Hot-swappable microSD card slot (supporting card with capacity of up to 16GB) Accelerometer for auto screen rotate Virtual QWERTY keyboard FM radio with RDS Widgets interface Multi-tasking with a real task manager Excellent touch optimized image gallery Handwriting recognition Smart dialing Office document viewer (no PowerPoint) Simple, yet stylish design Relatively inexpensive price Main disadvantages:No 3G support No Wi-Fi Video recording no good at QVGA@12fps Camera has no auto focus and flash No DivX/Xvid support No standard 3.5mm audio jack

LG KC550 review: No thrills, all camera

A line of multimedia-oriented handsets has secured LG a strong foothold in the cameraphone kingdom. LG KC550 is probably the first to join the club with only imaging in mind. A mid-range handset with top-of-the-shelf photo and video capabilities is probably what describes best the compact slider.

The LG KC550 sure lacks the Viewty power and Secret's Black Label charisma. OK, it's unassuming, but not without a talent of its own. The 5 megapixel slider strives to be the most affordable cameraphone out there with a Wide VGA@30fps video recording topping.

Those qualities have set many shutterbugs a foot with excitement as they are finally promised uncompromising cameraphone capabilities at an afordable price tag that's fit for the masses. But please, don't go throwing your digital camera just yet - let's first see what LG have for us this time.

Key features:
2.4" 262K-color display of QVGA resolution
Auto screen rotation in image gallery and video player (built-in accelerometer)
5 megapixel autofocus camera with active lens cover and Power LED flash
720x480pixel@30fps video recording (VGA@15fps is also an option)
USB and stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) connectivity
Hot-swappable microSD card slot (capacities up to 4GB)
Office document viewer
FM radio
TV-out port
Six games, which make use of the accelerometer and vibration feedback
Google Search and Mail come pre-installed
Main disadvantages:
Video recording is a great disappointment
Only 12MB of internal memory
Poor sunlight legibility
Really awkward file manager
No UMTS support
Only tri-band GSM support
Glossy front panel is a fingerprint magnet
No SSL support in the native email client
FM radio lacks RDS and cannot run in the background

LG KF700 review: A touch of slide, a touch of scroll

The LG KF700 (codenamed Virgo) is among the latest LG full touch handsets. Besides being one of the most affordable one among those, it stands out with multiple control-and-navigation methods. LG KF700 puts together a 3" touchscreen display, a slide-out standard keypad and a side mounted scroll wheel with an adjacent OK key. The neat and solid KF700 blends together elegance and great web surfing to broaden its appeal beyond the fashion-savvy.

With 3.5G aboard a sharp and nifty touch UI, we waste no time to fire it up and see it perform. Stay with us for more of LG KF700.

Key features
Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE plus HSDPA 7.2Mbps
3 megapixel autofocus camera
Secondary camera for video calls
3" 262K-color TFT touchscreen display with a 240x480 pixel resolution
Touch feedback (haptics)
FM radio
Stereo Bluetooth
176MB internal memory, microSD card slot (hot-swap)
Sliding hardware keypad
Side scroll wheel with an OK key
Retail headset has a standard 3.5mm audio jack
Office document viewer
Multi-tasking support with a task manager
Pleasing touch-optimized web browser
Google Maps pre-installed
Main disadvantages
The side scroll wheel seems redundant
Image quality is only average
Video recording maxes out at QVGA@15fps
FM radio has no RDS
Music player lacks equalizer settings
Web browser doesn't have flash support
No screen auto rotation

The LG KF700 was announced back in February 2008 and this review is not our first encounter with it - you may remember we did a quick and dirty preview of a pre-release sample back in May. Now that we have a retail KF700 unit, we decided to upgrade our preview to a full-featured review, covering all the ins and outs of this affordable touch phone.

LG KF700 has a remarkably responsive user interface, fashionable looks and strives to deliver most of the multimedia applications you might want in a mobile phone. The three input methods are diverse enough for you to find your preference. However, all the three types are rather fused - the only one you could go without is the scroll wheel. The touchscreen display does the job for most tasks, but you need the keypad to enter text. The keypad is useless on its own too, because it has no D-pad. So in the end, you are bound to use at least two of the input methods described.

LG KF750 Secret preview: Adding to the fun

Sophisticated looks and exclusive bodywork have unfailingly implied a no-thrills performance. Now, that may as well be the Secret about LG KF750. What we have here is an exquisitely crafted premium handset with a feature pack worthy of its looks. The LG KF750 Secret is the third slimmest handset to feature a 5 megapixel camera and that's just the icing of the cake. Touch screen and exotic Neon Touch navigation, some amazing video recording capabilities and auto-rotation get delivered in a carbon fiber and tempered glass package. Never has Black Label promised this much.

An out-and-out review of the tempting LG KF750 Secret is under way but we feel a first look is quite worth it.

LG KT610 review: Communicator wannabe

KT610 is LG's way of saying the communicator class isn't reserved for insanely expensive high end devices. Packing a large full-QWERTY keyboard and neat and simple looks, the S60 Symbian handset spells business. It might have a few features missing but a frown at the spec sheet may as well melt into a smile at the price tag. Economy class is good enough as long as it gets you there. One particularly exciting thing about LG KT610 is the stark contrast between the touchingly old-school front and the serious stuff inside. So let's open it up and see what we say.

Key features:
Full QWERTY keyboard
2.4" 262K-color QVGA display inside
1.45" 262K-color secondary display
Symbian OS v9.2 with S60 rel. 3.1 UI
3G with HSDPA
Compact dimensions for a communicator
2 megapixel fixed-focus camera
Built-in GPS receiver with excellent sensitivity
More affordable than other communicators
Bluetooth and USB v2.0
64MB of internal memory and microSD card slot
Main disadvantages:
No Wi-Fi
Mediocre camera
No image geotagging
Tiny external display of little usability
Unimpressive battery life
No A-GPS
No document editor out-of-the-box
No PDF reader or ZIP manager preinstalled

LG KT610 is a blessing for heavy texters who do appreciate the Symbian way of handling messaging. The dream texting skills however come at a price - the multimedia handling has suffered. In addition, cutting corners on cost has affected the preloaded content, which is rather scarce.
